Evidence film takes of the production according to the genre
Genre Conventions
This is a screen grab of a clear convention in our genre which is thriller. Within thriller there are elements of mystery. This can be seen here with the masked character mysteriously peeking at the main character after they pass by. A connotation of this is the mystery as it is something abnormal to see. Another link is that the mysterious character is masked with a black jacket which makes them unknown to the audience. The masked character also doesn't have an background introduction of who they exactly are unlike the main character whom which its made clear from the start they are a student. The masked figure creates horror mystery which is the type of conventions that we are aiming for.
This can be considered to have similarities in terms of how both ours and this films character acts in this scene within the film The Shining. As there is a specific scene where a character can be seen abnormally peaking through the hole of a door. This can create a weird feeling in the audience as even though they have found other areas of scenes or characters that they can relate to themselves, this specific scene creates a weird feeling in the audience. They are seeing a scene where they cannot relate to a character seen within the film, which could give them negative reactions such as fear as they do not know what to expect from that character. This would also push the audience to be more engaged and interested, as they would most like try to anticipate what could happen afterwards. This denotes that this scene in our film conforms with a general convention that can be seen in similar Mystery/Thriller films.
Another aspect of genre conventions that our short film conforms to is the use of a masked figure. Within many mystery thriller films and short films, there would need to be a sense of mystery, such as the identity of a certain character. Within our short film we have a character that has a mask and does not show his face through out the short film. However because of this character a lot of mystery occurs, such as the student being randomly transported somewhere else.
This is a fictional horror character who's name is Jason Vorhees. Within this film the character has shown to always wear their mask and it is never actually shown on film of the actual characters face. This creates mystery and is sort of the aspect that we wanted to head in for our masked figure, as the audience will barely know anything about the character as they watch our short film. This can make the audience question out of interest who or what they may be.
The second screen grabs also links with a convention in our genre, which is thriller. This convention is a scene where the main character is attempting to run away from the masked character. This is an element of action which can also be considered as a convention in thriller as it builds suspense in the visual. This scene contains footsteps sound effects to help emphasise the scene. This can connote the scene to be viewed as more suspenseful . The sound would be considered as diegetic as it can physically be seen within the scene that the character is running.
Our running scene can link to another example coming from the film Baby Driver. This scene specifically is where the main character runs from the police. The police sounds could be considered as diegetic as they are seen in the background. There are also light footsteps that can be heard from the running, which makes it a diegetic sound as we can see him running. This scene contains music over the background to help make it from the audience point of view more action based and suspenseful. This is also something that we have attempted to implement as we have played music on our running action based scenes. We believe having that sound there would boost the suspense. The fast movement of the camera within the Baby Driver movie scene is also another convention that we had similarities. The character seen in our film contains heavy movement, making the visibility more blurry with these scene to make the scene more action packed.
Short Film Conventions
One type of short film convention that we have conformed to is timing. Throughout the production of our product we made sure to factor in how long we'd intend for the short film to be. Shorts have a convention to be more short in duration when compared to general films. The two short films that we have put here are examples of shorts films that follow this convention of having a short timing. Most short films follow the conventions of having a short duration as the contents mainly put them into the moment rather than having scenes of explaining character backstories, which can be considered as another convention within short films.
Looking at the duration of our short film, this can be denoted as to be conforming with one of the conventions of short film, being short durations.
Another convention that we have conformed to in our short film, is the existence of minimal or short dialogue. Throughout our short film many of the scenes only consist of one or two characters, as we intend to only have in total 2 physical characters that are seen and one digital character who is the friend that the student texts to at the beginning of the short film. A connotation of this that can seem to be understood by the audience due to the sounds having more of an echo is that the character is talking directly to themself or thinking in their head.

Similarly within this film called Wait. The character has shown to have no dialogue, but rather sit there imagining himself as a drummer while waiting for his food. Another similarity that can also be seen is the lack of characters. Since within this short film the character seen within the picture is the only character that is physically seen through the entire short film
Regulatory Guidelines
The rating that we have considered to appropriate for our content is 15, which are normally films with a lot more action, violence and language.
These are the following codes that they have applied to this rating which denotes that we cannot make our content intense and will have to mild violence if any violence were to exist within our content. These are the following attributes that the regulatory board considers to be the aspects of a 15 rated film. Our short film would fit into this category as it contains dangerous behaviour.
Specifically one main aspect is threat and horror, which is specifically linked to the genre that we aim to make our film for.
